POE
Hygroscopy is the ability of a substance to attract and hold water molecules from the surrounding environment. This is achieved through either absorption or adsorption with the absorbing or adsorbing material becoming physically 'changed,' somewhat, by an increase in volume, stickiness, or other physical characteristic of the material, as water molecules become 'suspended' between the material's molecules in the process.
The phenomenon described above happens to most POE-based oils used in HFC-Hydrofluorocarbon refrigeration. These high Specific Gravity oils have been known to absorb as much as 2,000 ppm (parts per million) of water, while still in their original containers! This level of water contamination is considered unacceptable for proper compressor function and most used oil labs will condemn the oil sample as unsatisfactory for continued service. Contaminated oil can lead to accelerated bearing wear, corrosion of metallic components and an increase in Total Acid Number (TAN) of the oil. This leads to short oil life, high head pressure, copper plating and unreliable compressor performance.
Many formulators have attempted to alleviate the problem by using metal containers. This ‘solution’ is only a partial cure. Once the seal is broken, hygroscopicity is unstoppable!
Extol Lubricants has recognized this problem and has attacked the issue from the POE oil formulation side. I can confirm from tests conducted - the Extol SRO-32, SRO-46, SRO-68, SRO-100 + oil range are 75% less hygroscopic than all competitors’ POE-based formulations. In a controlled open container 30-day test, the equivalent competitive POE oils had approximately 1900 ppm (0.19 wt%) water compared to <500 ppm (<0.05 wt%) water for our products. Mineral
Extol HDT Series are compressor lubricants that are 50% higher quality than conventional mineral oils on the market, holding benefits of less component wear, less oil carryover & extended oil drains out to two years. Besides providing value-added benefits in the areas of improved system efficiency and higher productivity, the performance advantages of Extol HDT Series versus other naphthenic oils include:

Extol HDT Series are miscible with HCFC and CFC refrigerants such as R-22, R-502 and R-12 while featuring excellent stability in the refrigeration system. Extol HDT Oils also perform excellently with refrigerants such as R-717, R-600a and R-290.
Extol HDT Oils are refined from specially selected naphthenic crude oils by special method assuring excellent lubricity and other properties. This means that Extol HDT Oils don't leave waxy deposits in the system such as valves or evaporators. It offers outstanding fluidity at low temperature conditions resulting good oil return.
Extol HDT Oils directly replace other mineral based oils such as: - (Suniso 3GS/4GS/5GS, Shell Clavus, BPCastrol Icematic, BVA, Bitzer, CPI, Camco, Capella, Cimco, Citgo, ExxonMobil, Reniso, Maneurop, Trane, York and others in certain applications).

Alkylbenzene:
Extol AB Series is formulated from an AB-Alkylbenzene synthetic blend and designed to function under the stringent requirements of CFCs-Chlorofluorocarbon and HCFCs- Hydro chlorofluorocarbon refrigerants like R11, R12, R13, R22, R113, R114, R123, R124 R401a, R401b, R402a, R402b, R403b, R406a, R408a, R409a, R500, R502, R503; & R717 (NH3 aka ammonia) DX and liquid overfeed industrial refrigeration systems. Besides its inherent inertness, improved system efficiency and higher productivity, the performance advantages of Extol AB Series versus naphthenic oils and other AB formulations include:
- Partial miscibility and solubility with CFCs, HCFCs and ammonia for improved oil return to the compressor and component (valve) corrosion protection;
- Superior system cleanliness and lubricity to reduce component wear;
- Superior chemical and thermal stability;
- Lower foaming tendency; and
- Extended oil drain capability.
It is guaranteed to function with evaporators operating down to -40°C. AB Series is compatible with all types of seals and O-rings used in ammonia compressors including Neoprene (chloroprene), Buna-N and NBR. AB Series is also 100% compatible with naphthenic and paraffinic mineral oils, as well as PAO and AB synthetic oils, which allows top-off over these other oils and eliminates the need for system flushes and excessive evaporator maintenance.
Extol AB series is non-hygroscopic; they separate from water, therefore do not require metal container packaging. This is also the case for Extol SRO and Extol PSR range. These oils are completely miscible and compatible with all POE oil variations on the market today, but with added benefits. Extol AB series are miscible with other alkylbenzene and mineral oils and can be used as a complete top up without the need to drain.
Extol AB Oils directly replace most mineral oils and other alkylbenzene based lubricants such as: - (BVA, CPI, Carrier, ExxonMobil Zerice, Frick, FES, Reniso, Vilter, York, Zerol and others in certain applications).
